Despite its new 5800 XpressMusic and E71 handset launches it’s believed Nokia maybe about to release cheaper smartphones.
It is looking to do this in order to expand the market and reach more consumers, as current prices will certainly put off many potential sales, especially during the recession.
It is believed that Nokia has asked a company in Taiwan to manufacture such a product based on a high volume order against a large sales forecast.
At the same time Nokia has said they’re looking to open up their “Ovi Store”, where consumers can download apps, to third-party developers.
Executive Vice President of Services at Nokia, Niklas Savander said, “We believe this will create a better experience for Nokia’s millions of customers and spur opportunities for game developers”.
Nokia’s plans for the smartphone market are likely to be based on financial considerations> As smartphones increase in popularity they will want to take a higher share of the total mobile phone market and not allow the likes of the new open source Google Android product to take a hold.
